Advanced Thermovoltaic Systems Wins Prestigious Earthshot Prize for “Fix Our Climate” Innovation at the 2024 Earthshot Prize Awards in Cape Town, South Africa

Recognized by Prince William, Advanced Thermovoltaic Systems is transforming the future of energy with its groundbreaking solution to industrial waste heat

ATS to receive £1 million to accelerate and scale the impact of their innovative environmental solution

[Cape Town, South Africa] – November 6, 2024 – In a monumental achievement for clean energy innovation, Advanced Thermovoltaic Systems (ATS), a Canadian-based company, has been awarded the Fix Our Climate Earthshot Prize, one of the world’s most prestigious environmental accolades. The award, announced at the Earthshot Prize Awards Ceremony in Cape Town, South Africa, recognizes ATS for its revolutionary solution to capture and convert industrial waste heat into sustainable electricity without the need for moving parts.

The Earthshot Prize, founded by Prince William, honors global changemakers with innovative solutions to the world’s most pressing environmental challenges. As one of five winners selected from nearly 2,500 nominees across 75 countries, ATS will receive a £1 million prize to further scale its transformative technology. This year’s competition, held in partnership with Bloomberg Philanthropies, drew global attention as the Earthshot Prize revealed its finalists at the Earthshot Innovation Summit during Climate Week NYC.

Speaking during the Awards Ceremony, Prince William said: “I believe our world can be rich in possibility, in hope, and in optimism. That is why The Earthshot Prize exists. To champion the game-changers, the inventors, the makers, the creatives, the leaders; to help them build upon the amazing things they’ve already achieved; to speed their innovations to scale and to inspire the next generation to create the future we all need."

“Receiving the Earthshot Prize is an extraordinary honor, validating our mission to transform how industries reduce their environmental impact,” said Kelly Adams, CEO of Advanced Thermovoltaic Systems. “Our technology offers a circular energy solution that creates valuable electricity and reduces emissions at scale. Winning this Earthshot Prize will allow us to accelerate our impact, expand our reach into industries such as manufacturing, steel, cement, and chemical production and advance our mission to eliminate CO2 emissions worldwide.”

ATS’ solid-state technology radically redefines the way industries manage waste heat by converting it into valuable, clean energy. Unlike traditional methods that have relied on turbines for over 200 years, ATS’s solution is 99% circular, with zero moving parts, making it a cost-effective, sustainable, and scalable technology capable of avoiding millions of tons of CO2 emissions. This positions ATS as a vital player in the global push for sustainable industrial solutions.

Advanced Thermovoltaic Systems tackles one of industry’s most overlooked inefficiencies: the loss of 60% of all industrial energy as waste heat. This unused energy represents a vast resource, equal to the energy needs of four billion homes—twice the total number of households worldwide.

As the world moves toward a cleaner, greener future, ATS is poised to play a pivotal role in addressing the global energy crisis by offering a revolutionary, scalable, sustainable solution.

The five Winners of the 2024 Prize cohort were selected by Prince William and The Earthshot Prize Council, a diverse group of experts, advocates and individuals dedicated to championing urgent and innovative action to protect our planet. The Earthshot Prize Council is chaired by The Earthshot Prize Board of Trustees Chair, Dame Christiana Figueres, architect of the Paris Agreement.

Members of The Earthshot Prize Council include: His Royal Highness Prince William, Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah, José Andrés, Sir David Attenborough, Cate Blanchett, Ernest Gibson, Hindou Oumarou Ibrahim, Wanjira Mathai, Stella McCartney, Nemonte Nenquimo, Luisa Neubauer, Indra Nooyi, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and Naoko Yamazaki.

In addition to the five £1 million prizes supporting the growth of Winners’ solutions, each of the 15 Earthshot Prize Finalists will receive dedicated mentorship, resources and technical support through the year-long Earthshot Prize Fellowship Programme.

That support includes access to the Prize’s robust network of influential experts and partners, including The Earthshot Prize’s Global Alliance of Partners, comprised of some of the world’s largest businesses, donors, investors and environmental organizations committed to climate action.

Finalists will also have access to Launchpad, Earthshot’s bespoke online finance platform to matchmake Earthshot solutions to a growing community of members made up of mission-aligned donors and investors seeking to speed proven environmental solutions to scale.

ATS would like to extend their gratitude to Herbert Smith Freehills LLP for their support in nominating ATS for the Earshot prize and to Holcim for their strategic partnership.
